The Status of Urban Governance in India

La Politique, Department of Political Science, Kirori Mal College in collaboration with Praja Foundation organized a WEBINAR on the topic “The Status of Urban Governance in India” with the guest speaker for the webinar Mr. Aviral Narayan Dubey, Project Officer of Praja Foundation, who also has great learning in Urban Development and Management on 18th March 2021 at 4:00PM via ZOOM platform. Praja recently launched the Urban Governance Index (UGI), 2020. The webinar focused on the 73rd and 74th Amendment, Citizen Grievance Redressal Mechanism, Status of Fiscal Decentralization, and a lot more. The speaker began by explaining how rapid industrialisation is leading to an increase in urban population, followed by a video on how the local government at grassroot level functions. It was an overall interactive session where the speaker frequently engaged the audience with question and answers round at regular intervals. The speaker also elucidated the Urban Governance Index 2020 of Praja Foundation. He further elaborated on the role, influence, and behavior of Mayors and/or local councilors, and laid emphasis on devolution of financial power, taxation process, and active citizen participation. It was a fruitful discussion which concluded with everyone agreeing that in order to encourage public participation the government needs to incorporate a “bottom-up” approach as the current “top-down” approach is not very effective.
